Pallet Flow Rack in Baltimore, Maryland

Pallet flow rack in Baltimore is the system I reach for when a food or beverage distributor near the port has to ship the oldest pallet first and has no floor to spare.

Pallets load at the high end of a sloped roller lane and glide to the pick face at the low end, one behind the other.

How Pallet Flow Racking Delivers First In, First Out

Every lane has two faces. The loading aisle feeds pallets in at the back; the picking aisle takes them out at the front. Nothing newer can ever jump the queue.

That makes pallet flow racking the natural fit for dated product. Rotation is built into the steel instead of depending on a driver's memory.

It also separates two jobs. Replenishment trucks work one aisle and pickers work another, so they stop crowding each other.

Older City Buildings and Lane Length

Warehouses around Curtis Bay, Fairfield and Locust Point are often older, with tight column grids. Lane length has to fit between those columns and still leave both aisles.

We measure the grid and set lane depth so the block lands cleanly. Sometimes a shorter lane with more faces beats a long one that clips a column.

    Brakes, Speed Controllers and Slope

Gravity does the work, but it has to be controlled. Speed controllers spaced along the lane keep a loaded pallet moving at walking pace. A pallet separator at the exit holds back the line while the front load is lifted.

Slope is set for your heaviest and lightest pallets together. Too steep and heavy loads run; too shallow and light loads stall.

    Pallet Condition Matters

Rollers carry the bottom boards, so broken boards, missing blocks or hanging stretch wrap can stop a pallet mid-lane. Most flow problems I get called about trace back to pallets.

Agree on a pallet standard before installation. Port imports on odd pallets may need to be re-palletized or kept in selective rack.

Choosing Gravity Flow Rack or Pushback

Both store pallets several deep. A gravity flow rack is first in, first out with separate load and pick aisles. Pushback is last in, first out, loaded and picked from one aisle, and needs less floor.

If date order is required, choose flow. If not, pushback rack in Baltimore may fit the space better.

Case Picking From the Flow Face

Many city distributors pick cases straight off the front pallet. Below or beside it, carton flow rack in Baltimore can hold slower items so the same aisle serves both.

High-Volume SKUs Earn the Deep Lanes

Pallet flow racking costs more per position than selective rack, so it should hold the items that move the most. A lane that sits half empty for weeks gives nothing back.

Use your heaviest shipping weeks to rank SKUs. The fastest movers get the deepest lanes; the rest stay selective.

Pallet Flow Rack Inspection and Upkeep

A pallet flow rack runs for years with simple habits. Walk the lanes weekly, look for a roller that does not spin or a brake that looks damaged, and clear debris such as broken boards or wrap.

Fork strikes at the pick face are the most common damage, so entry guides and a clear exit area help. Replace a damaged roller section rather than leaving a lane half working.
