Drive-In Rack in Columbia, Maryland
Drive-in rack in Columbia is not a common fit, and I say that up front. Most flex buildings near Columbia Gateway hold too many different SKUs for lanes that only work when they fill with one item.
Where it does fit is a consumer-brand distributor holding deep runs of a handful of products in a building that cannot grow.
What Drive-In Pallet Rack Actually Does
The truck drives into a lane between upright frames and sets pallets on rails that run front to back. There is no aisle inside the block, which is why drive-in pallet rack packs so many pallets into so little floor.
Each lane holds one SKU. Mixing items in a lane means pulling pallets out to reach the one behind.

Testing Your Inventory First
Before drawing anything, list SKUs with the pallets you hold of each in a busy week. If only a few items have ten or more pallets on hand, those are the drive-in candidates.
Everything else belongs in selective rack, pushback or flow lanes.
Drive-In Rack in Lower Flex Buildings
Buildings along Snowden River Parkway and in Oakland Mills often sit in the 18 to 32 foot range. A drive-in rack in that height may run three or four pallets high.
Clearance matters more than usual, because the truck's mast and overhead guard travel inside the structure. We set the lowest rail height so the guard clears with room to spare.
LIFO, and the Drive-Thru Alternative
Single-entry lanes are last in, first out. For seasonal stock or products without dates, that is fine.
Drive-thru racking adds a second open end, so lanes load on one side and empty on the other in arrival order. In a small Columbia suite, the second aisle is often hard to find room for.
Rails, Guides and Truck Fit
Rails support pallet edges, so pallet width and type set rail spacing. The lane must also be wide enough for the truck body with clearance on both sides.
Floor guides at the entrance center the truck. Upright protectors take the inevitable bumps.
Sharing Space With Offices and Assembly
Columbia flex suites often mix storage with offices, kitting or a showroom. A compact drive-in block along one wall leaves the rest of the floor open for that work.
Pushback and Pallet Flow as Alternatives
For items with three to six pallets each, pushback rack in Columbia is usually the better choice; trucks stay outside the lanes. For lot-controlled medical or electronics stock, a Columbia pallet flow layout keeps rotation strict.
Training and Daily Use
Driving inside a drive-in pallet rack takes care. Operators should enter straight, at slow speed, with the load raised only as needed. A short training session at handover sets the habits.
Lane Depth for a Columbia Drive-In Rack
Depth should match how many pallets of each item you usually hold. A lane that is too deep sits half empty, which wastes the density the system promises.
For a smaller Columbia operation, four to six deep is common; we confirm with your numbers.
Checking a Drive-In Rack Each Week
Walk the openings once a week. Look for bent posts, rails knocked out of line and anchors that have shifted.
In a small Columbia suite, one damaged lane takes a large share of your bulk capacity, so catching damage early matters.
Report any contact so the steel can be reviewed.
