Drive-In Rack in Dundalk, Maryland
Drive-in rack in Dundalk is built for the moment a container yard sends over forty pallets of the same product and the warehouse has nowhere to put them.
Forklifts enter the rack itself, set pallets on rails deep inside each lane, and the block swallows that whole lot without a single internal aisle.
Import Lots and Drive-In Pallet Rack
Port-related warehousing near the Dundalk Marine Terminal receives freight by the container, and many containers carry one SKU. That is the inventory profile drive-in pallet rack was designed for.
Each lane holds one item, filled back to front. When the lot ships, the lane empties front to back and is ready for the next container.

Density Versus Access
The tradeoff is access. You can only reach the front pallet of each lane. If customers order a mix of items in small quantities, that becomes a problem fast.
Use drive-in for reserve lots and keep active picks in selective rack nearby.
Drive-Thru Racking for Older Lots First
Some import contracts require the oldest container to ship first. Drive-thru racking opens both ends, loading from receiving and unloading toward shipping.
That rotation costs an extra aisle, but it can still store far more than selective rows.
Older Dundalk Buildings
Warehouses near North Point and Sollers Point are often older and lower-clear, with column spacing that does not match modern lane widths.
We draw lanes between existing columns and confirm the truck can enter each one squarely. In lower buildings, a drive-in rack might run three or four pallets high.
Rail Sizing for Import Pallets
Rails carry pallets by their edges, so pallet width and construction matter. Imported freight arrives on a range of pallets, some not standard in the US.
Either standardize pallets at receiving or design rails for the narrowest pallet you accept. A pallet that is too narrow can drop between rails.
Truck Clearance Inside the Lanes
The lane must fit the truck's mast, overhead guard and body with clearance on every side. Send the truck make, model and dimensions before design.
Floor guides at each entrance keep the truck centered, and post protectors take the inevitable contact.
Weather and Staging
Many port-area buildings are unheated in winter and hot in summer. Plan staging space near the dock so containers can be unloaded quickly and put away into lanes as the shift allows.
When Pushback or Pallet Flow Fits Better
If lots average fewer pallets per SKU, pushback rack in Dundalk gives more faces and keeps trucks outside the structure. For dated imports with moderate depth, a Dundalk pallet flow system offers first in, first out without trucks entering lanes.
Lane Depth and Drive-In Rack Sizing
Depth follows lot size. If a typical container brings twenty pallets of an item and you stack four high, five deep fills the lane exactly.
Partial lots should go to selective rack so a deep drive-in rack lane is never tied up holding three pallets.
Weekly Drive-In Rack Checks
Port-area traffic is heavy, and the openings of a drive-in rack take the hits. Walk the block weekly for bent posts and rails out of line.
Clear debris from lane floors, since broken pallet boards can foul a truck's wheels inside the lane.
Flag damage for review before loading resumes, and keep spare rail sections in the building.
