Pushback Rack in Sparrows Point, Maryland

Pushback rack in Sparrows Point is mostly a Tradepoint Atlantic conversation: large, newer distribution buildings with 32 to 40 foot clear heights serving e-commerce, import logistics and manufacturing supply.

The system holds two to six pallets per lane on nested carts riding inclined rails, all handled from one aisle.

Big Boxes and Push Back Racking

Tall buildings let pushback run many levels high. Combined with lane depth, that can multiply reserve capacity per aisle compared to selective rows.

With deep-water berths, short-line rail and CSX / Norfolk Southern access feeding the site, inbound freight often arrives in volume, which is the pattern deep lanes need.

E-commerce operations in big boxes face a different problem: thousands of SKUs, with only a fraction held deep. A pushback rack serves that fraction. The rest live in selective rows, carton flow or shelving. Sizing the pushback pallet rack block to the deep fraction, rather than the whole building, prevents lanes that sit half empty for months.

Bethlehem Boulevard and I-695 access make inbound truck volume heavy, so plan door-side staging alongside the lanes.

Edgemere-side buildings may differ in column spacing, so we confirm the grid from your drawings.

Deciding Pushback Lane Depth at Scale

Large buildings tempt people into deep lanes everywhere. Resist that. Depth should follow pallets on hand per SKU, which varies across a big item list.

A typical result mixes three-deep, four-deep and five-deep bays with selective rows for single-pallet items. The CAD layout shows filled positions for each group.

Big floor plates also make travel distance a real cost. Put the deepest lanes near the doors that receive those items, and keep slow items farther back. Shorter driver trips add up across a full shift in a building this size.

How Pushback Pallet Rack Works in Practice

A driver sets each pallet on the leading cart and the stored loads shift rearward. Pulling the front load lets the next advance by gravity. No truck enters the lane.

Rotation is last in, first out, so dated product is better in a Sparrows Point pallet flow system.

Pushback Rack Frame Loads at Height

More levels mean more total weight on each upright. Frames are sized for a fully loaded lane at every level and your beam spacing. Each elevation reserves height for nested carts plus the lift, and upper levels are checked against truck reach.

Expanding a building already fitted with selective rack? Pushback bays can often connect to it if the connector matches. Photos confirm that.

Pushback Rack With Rail and Port Freight at Tradepoint

Freight reaching Tradepoint Atlantic by ship or rail often lands in large lots of one item. That is the textbook case for pushback rack: deep, single-SKU lanes that fill completely.

Push back racking also pairs well with selective pick faces at the lower level. Reserve sits above and behind; picks happen in front.

Summer heat in large non-air-conditioned buildings affects install crew scheduling, so we plan pushback pallet rack installation in zones and stage material near each one.

Drive-In for Very Deep Import Runs

If a few SKUs hold far more than six pallets and empty in batches, compare a Sparrows Point drive-in layout. Density rises; handling slows.
