# Pushback Rack in Baltimore, Maryland

Pushback rack in Baltimore solves a problem I see constantly inside the city line: a building with tight column bays and modest clear height that is running out of pallet slots long before the lease ends.

Instead of stacking higher, the system stores loads deeper, two to six per lane, on carts that ride inclined rails toward one working aisle.

## Older City Buildings and Push Back Racking

Much of the warehouse stock around Curtis Bay, Fairfield and Locust Point is older single-story or multi-story space. Column lines land where they land, and roof decks are often lower than a modern bulk box.

Selective rows in that kind of shell burn a full aisle for every two rows of steel. When the same pallet arrives in multiples, folding those rows into deeper lanes returns floor that was only serving as travel space.

We lay lanes between the columns you have rather than pretending the grid is open. Sometimes a three-deep bay fits where a four-deep would clip a column; the drawing shows both.

Fairfield and Curtis Bay buildings also tend to see heavy truck traffic at the docks, so I keep the pushback rack block away from the main door lanes. Drivers putting away reserve should not cross the path of trucks being loaded. When a building has both port freight and local food deliveries, the drawing separates the two flows before a single pushback pallet rack bay is placed, so each team has its own approach.

## What Happens Inside Each Lane

Nested carts sit on rails sloped toward the aisle. A new load pushes the stored pallet rearward; removing the front pallet lets the next one ease forward. The truck never enters the bay.

Because the newest pallet is always the one in front, rotation is last in, first out. Food distributors near the port who need dated rotation should weigh a Baltimore pallet flow system (https://baltimorepalletracks.com/service-area/baltimore/pallet-flow-rack) next to it.

## Choosing Between Selective, Pushback and Drive-In

Selective rack wins when nearly every SKU is a one- or two-pallet item. Pushback wins in the middle: items held three to six deep, with enough variety that you still want many separate faces.

If a few items run very deep and leave in batches, a drive-in layout in Baltimore (https://baltimorepalletracks.com/service-area/baltimore/drive-in-rack) packs even tighter, but the truck works inside the lanes and picking slows down.

## Lane Depth, Beams and Frame Capacity

Depth should follow the pallets you actually hold per SKU across a normal month. Lanes that sit half full cost money and give nothing back.

Frame selection depends on the combined lane weight and the vertical gap between levels. Each beam elevation also has to clear the cart stack and give the operator room to lift off. We size from your heaviest pallet.

Existing teardrop rack can sometimes receive pushback bays alongside it. A photo of the upright and beam connector tells us whether parts will match.

## Pushback Rack Loading Habits That Protect the Investment

A pushback rack only performs if operators load it the way it was drawn. Pallets should match the footprint the carts were sized for, with bottom boards intact, because a cracked deck board can hang up a cart halfway back.

In the city, I often find mixed pallet stock: domestic GMA pallets next to import pallets of a different size. We plan push back racking around the pallet you receive most, then mark lanes for the exceptions so they go to selective slots instead.

Load plaques belong on every pushback pallet rack bay, showing the rated weight per position. Operators should see the limit before the forks rise, not after something bends.

## Working With a Baltimore Pushback Pallet Rack Team

Port freight and food distribution around I-95 and I-895 rarely allow long shutdowns, so installation is sequenced by bay where the floor plan allows.

Our company is a division of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., in the business of supplying and installing rack since 1997. See the Baltimore service area page (https://baltimorepalletracks.com/service-area/baltimore) or the pushback rack product guide (https://baltimorepalletracks.com/products/pushback-rack), then send measurements for a free layout.
